Kangpokpi locally known as Kanggui is a town in Sadar Hills under Sadar Hills Autonomous District . It is the headquarter of the Sadar Hills Autonomous District. Kangpokpi is well connected to the capital Imphal by NH-39. Kangpokpi is principally inhabited by the Kukis with a fraction of Nepalis migrated and settled mostly for trade and related activities. Kangpokpi is a full fledged township with all sorts of amenities and facilities available for daily needs. Thadou-Kuki is the principle language of the town and trade is also carried out in this tongue. Kangpokpi has one govt hospital and one private hospital. It has around 20 schools with 2 schools offering computer education. It has two colleges Kanggui College and Manipur Theological College. The town is served by State Bank of India with ATM and Manipur State Cooperative Bank with two registered NBFC’s offering financial services to the people. It has a police station under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police. Kangpokpi also has a sports complex. The major newspaper of the town is The Gosem a Thadou-Kuki daily printed in Imphal and Zalen Banner a weekly also printed in Imphal. Jingvalpa a monthly magazine in Thadou-Kuki is printed in Kangpokpi. The town has many cable operators offering quality service and giving live telecast on incidents occurring in the town like important celebrations or an accident. The people of the township also has mobile news service facility that ensures better connectivity and effective spreading of information. Kangpokpi also has an Internet facilities provided by BSNL. Kangpokpi is a major trading centre for agriculture products bought from IT Road whereby it gets transported to the rest of the state from there. Recently many new complexes have come up and old ones upgraded. Surprisingly we find that the town is growing at a faster pace than ever imagined. The town is truly booming despite minimal assistance from the govt. Kangpokpi also boasts of large music production.

The town is in news recently for being the epicentre of the demand to upgrade Sadar Hills Autonomous District to a full fledged District status. The demand is spearheaded by the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC).

Kangpokpi is a major hill town in Senapati District. It is located on the National Highway 39 approaching Imphal from Dimapur via Kohima. Kukis and Nepalis are the major inhabitants settled in this town. One of the major rivers in Manipur, the Irang, originates from the Langka Chongjan area of Kangpokpi.
Kangpokpi is around 50 km north of Imphal.

Geography

It is located at 25°8′0″N 93°58′0″E at an elevation of 992 m above MSL.[1]

Location

National Highway 39 passes through Kangpokpi.
