There have been some positives. In the last three years, there have been no big terror incidents, relations with Pakistan have looked ahead and foodgrain production has touched a record 250 million tonnes.

But those have been the very thin silver lining in the proverbial black cloud of corruption, government inaction and unending economic woes with the common person forced to cut back on essentials as prices rise steeply.

As the helmsman, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh continues to get flak for being non-communicative and fighting the perception that he’s ceding space to the Congress’ preferred man, Rahul Gandhi.

Despite the backing of 300 plus seats in the Lok Sabha, the UPA-II, experts point out, appears to be in a state of drift, with its constituents sparring with each other over much-touted initiatives like the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC).

A spate of scams, including the 2G spectrum allocation scandal and the various allegations of graft associated with the 2010 Commonwealth Games, continues to haunt the UPA-II.

A combative opposition has hurled charges against home minister P Chidambaram over his alleged role in the 2G spectrum case and an assertive civil society, led by Anna Hazare, is trying hard to pin down the government over corruption.

The economy is in a dismal shape, with the rupee plunging to an all-time low of Rs.55.13 (as of Tuesday afternoon); inflation is soaring and manufacturing has declined.

“There is a general sense of disappointment at the performance of UPA-II. Electorally, it did much better than the UPA-I but there does not seem to be political will to take tough decisions,” S. Nihal Singh, veteran political commentator, said.

He noted that some stellar initiatives like the NCTC and the Lokpal (ombudsman) bill seemed to be going nowhere. Signature legislations in a limbo include the food security bill, the Lokpal bill and the land acquisition bill.

N. Bhaskar Rao, a political analyst, was also unsparing in his critique of the UPA-II. “There is nothing to celebrate… it’s time for serious introspection, course correction and new initiatives if the UPA-II wants to be re-elected.”

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has played the role of the opposition rather than an ally, forcing the government to backtrack on important initiatives like the FDI in multi-brand retail.

On the positive side, the very fact that the government, despite sparring partners, looks set to survive its full term is no mean achievement as it has spared the country bouts of political instability.

In a major step targeting the poor, the government also unveiled a reformed package of Mamatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) that promises to uplift millions of people.

In the area of foreign policy, the UPA-II has done relatively better and shown some vision in reviving the dialogue process with Pakistan and transforming a once-difficult relationship with Bangladesh.

One source of solace for the UPA-II seems to be the disarray in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“It’s plus point is that the BJP is not in a healthy shape either. So by default, it can still get re-elected,” said Nihal Singh.

But the disappointments run deep. The UPA-II performed dismally in four of five states that went to the polls earlier this year, retaining Manipur but losing Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab and barely scraping through in Uttarakhand.

Predictably, Congress spin doctors do not share this sense of gloom and doom.

“Whether it is allegation of corruption against a few ministers or challenges on the economic front, the government has tackled them boldly,” Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed said.

Earlier this month, Sonia Gandhi asked party leaders to aggressively portray the UPA government’s achievements.

But will messaging be enough in the absence of concrete achievements and bold course-correction measures? With two years to go, the UPA-II has still time to reverse the downslide in its image and credibility.

Chelsea beat Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties to win the Champions League on Saturday after the two sides had been locked at 1-1 at the end of extra-time. German international Thomas Mueller had headed Bayern into a deserved lead in the 83rd minute from a left wing cross before Didier Drogba levelled with a bullet header with just two minutes remaining of normal time.

Drogba conceded a penalty in the third minute of extra-time for a clumsy foul on Franck Ribery, but former Chelsea player Arjen Robben saw his penalty saved by Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

Chelsea fans have roared themselves horse, but an ominous tone has been set as Bayern begin to showcase an immaculate retention of the ball in the early stages.

Didier Drogba is provided some space down the right and the Ivorian flashes a centre across goal but the ball narrowly evades Salomon Kalou in the middle.

After their resolute performance at Camp Nou, and again tonight, Chelsea have displayed a captivating undertone to their play within the last few minutes, with some slick adventurous interplay.

The referee blows for half-time. Graham Hunter, Fußball Arena München: Just an enthralling 45 minutes where the plethora of incident compensates for a lack of goals. Indeed Mario Gomez, had he been on his normal predatory form, might have made this 3-0 to Bayern. However, Chelsea look robust, intelligent and capable of a breakaway.

The second half begins.

Chelsea will be all too aware of Bayern’s goalscoring exploits. Franck Ribéry scored 12 Bundesliga goals this term, passing his previous best of 11 set in 2007/08, while Mario Gomez has struck 42 goals in his last 51 appearances for club and country.

Franck Ribéry burst into life once more down the left and squares an inviting ball across goal but David Luiz is perfectly positioned to clear.

Bayern have controlled the game in many respects, enjoying 60% of possession while managing 13 shots on goal compared to Chelsea’s two.

Goalscoring heroics are reflected in a strong team ethic too, with the last seven of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League goals having been scored by seven different players.

HIS BIOGRAPHY

Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong on April 7th, 1954. His parents, Charles and Lee-lee Chan named him Chan Kong-sang which means “born in Hong Kong.” Jackie weighed 12 pounds when he was born and his mother required surgery to deliver him. Jackie’s parents were so poor that they had to borrow money from friends to pay the doctor.

Although Jackie’s parents were poor, they had steady jobs at the French embassy in Hong Kong. Charles was a cook and Lee-lee was a housekeeper. Together, the Chan family lived on Victoria Peak in Hong Kong. When Jackie was young, his father would wake him early in the morning and together they would practice kung fu. Charles Chan believed that learning kung fu would help build Jackie’s character, teaching him patience, strength, and courage.

When Jackie was seven years old Charles took a job as the head cook at the American embassy in Australia. He felt that it would be best for Jackie to stay behind in Hong Kong to learn a skill and so enrolled him in the China Drama Academy where Jackie would live for the next 10 years of his life.

During Jackie’s time at the school, he learned martial arts, acrobatics, singing, and acting. The school was meant to prepare boys for a life in the Peking Opera. Chinese opera was very different from any other kind of opera. It included singing, tumbling, and acrobatics as well as martial arts skills and acting. Students at the school were severely disciplined and were beaten if they disobeyed or made mistakes. It was a very harsh and difficult life but Jackie had nowhere else to go, so he stayed. He rarely saw his parents for many years.

While at the China Academy, Jackie made his acting debut at age eight in the Cantonese movie “Seven Little Valiant Fighters: Big and Little Wong Tin Bar.” He later teamed with other opera students in a performance group called “The Seven Little Fortunes.” Fellow actors Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao were also members. Years later the three would work together and become known as The Three Brothers. As Jackie got older he worked as a stuntman and an extra in the Hong Kong film industry.

When he was 17, he graduated from the China Drama Academy. Unfortunately the Chinese opera was no longer very popular, so Jackie and his classmates had to find other work. This was difficult because at the school they were never taught how to read or write. The only work available to them was unskilled labor or stunt work. Each year many movies were made in Hong Kong and there was always a need for young, strong stuntmen. Jackie was extraordinarily athletic and inventive, and soon gained a reputation for being fearless; Jackie Chan would try anything. Soon he was in demand.

Over the next few years, Jackie worked as a stuntman, but when the Hong Kong movie industry began to fail, he was forced to go to Australia to live with his parents. He worked in a restaurant and on a construction site. It was there that he got the name “Jackie.” A worker named Jack had trouble pronouncing “Kong-sang” and started calling Jackie “little Jack.” That soon became “Jackie” and the name stuck.

More interesting is the fact that the work order amounting to Rs 1.43 crore for completion of the bridge has continued to get revised due to delays and the last revised estimate was put at Rs 5.43 crore out of which Rs 4.57 crore has already been spent but the bridge remains incomplete.

Angry with the repeated delays, villagers from across the other side of the river filed an RTI which brought out glaring details about the money sanctioned, withdrawals and the little balance remaining even though the bridge is nowhere near completion.

The bridge was suppose to connect Williamnagar town through Warima locality across the river into Rongongre.

The first work order for the bridge construction was given out on March 25, 1986 estimated at Rs 1,43,65,000 but delays led to a revise of Rs 4,54,88,000,” informed villagers of Jakopgre who had filed the RTI application to know about the problem of delay.

The RTI also revealed that a second work order was given out estimated at Rs 5,43,54,000 out of which an expenditure of Rs 4,57,90,000 has already been utilized. Only Rs 85,63,300 remains.

The villagers question as to why the bridge remains incomplete after so much of money has been spent.

There are over fifty villages across the river whose people depend heavily on the completion of the bridge. During the monsoon the people from the other side suffer immensely with many lives lost due to drowning from the strong water currents. Families have lost their food items while trying to cross the river and villagers trying to bring their fruits and vegetables to Williamnagar for sale have also lost their earnings in the water. Also, hundreds of school children have lost the opportunity to appear their exams in Williamnagar because they were not able to cross over during the monsoon when the river currents are strong.

“Every time elections come round the corner the candidates promise to complete the bridge but in the end they do not fulfill their word and by the next round of elections the same assurance is given by a new batch of candidates,” said the villagers.

“I am very happy to participate in today’s function which celebrates a very significant event in the history of free India. Sixty years ago, on 13th May 1952, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha held their first sessions, after the completion of the first General Elections in the country. On that day, the newly elected Members of Parliament took oath, and it is fortunate that four of them – Shri Rishang Keishing who continues to be a Member of Parliament, Shri Reshamlal Jangde, Shri Kandala Subrahmanyam and Shri K. Mohana Rao are here with us today. I warmly congratulate them and also all those present here.

As the world’s largest democracy, India can be proud that since winning its freedom and adopting a Constitution, it has continuously walked the path of democracy. Skeptics, in those early post-Independence days, doubted whether democracy in such a large and diverse country could possibly survive. We proved them wrong. Over and over again, repeatedly, in accordance with the Constitution, representatives to Parliament, State Legislatures and Local Bodies have been chosen through electoral exercises, which have been fair and open. Our record has been remarkable and there is widespread acclaim about the tenacious manner in which we have adhered to democracy.

However today, democracies of the world are operating in complex situations. Pressures are developing on account of many reasons – demands for development are louder, people are articulating their demands very vocally and many shades of opinions are emerging. There is always the requirement of finding a balance between various expectations. There are now fractured mandates. Governments are mostly coalitions and legislatures are composed of many parties. There are regional aspirations as well. The last decade has also seen an explosion of the media. Hence, democracy now functions in the midst of various new scenarios, which are internal as well as those emanating out of complex international situations, in a world that is more integrated and inter-dependent. Against this background, India is committed to take the nation forward on the path of peace, development and progress, through a democratic system of governance, while protecting the sanctity of the institutions established by the Constitution. The big challenge is for democracy to proceed towards being a vibrant but healthy democracy. It is, therefore, necessary to walk ahead carefully, with determination, so that the main aim of establishing a progressive and healthy democracy is never lost sight of. For this, various aspects are important and need to be taken into consideration. I will speak of some of them.

Elections are the foundation stone of any democracy and therefore, the first pillar of any healthy democracy is sound electoral practices. Our Election Commission, as an independent entity, has performed remarkably well in organizing elections of a huge electorate. However, we must constantly improve our systems, and remove all corrupt and other malpractices from our electoral processes, and from our society.

Parliament is the repository of the will of the people. Therefore, people’s growing aspirations and expectations need to be translated here into policy decisions and necessary legislation. Discussions can be difficult and divergent, but yet solutions have to be found through discussions in Parliament, and resolved through established parliamentary practices. Parliamentarians serve the people. In this connection, the words of Mahatma Gandhi in his poem entitled, ‘A Servant’s Prayer’ are very important. He said and I quote, “As a humble servant and a friend of the masses, may we never part from those whom we wish to serve”. Unquote

Democracy, in the true sense of the word, also means a shared responsibility. Democracy can survive, flourish and grow when there is respect for all stakeholders, and for differing opinions, and where institutions of democracy are functioning in harmony in general. Whether it is the Legislatures, the Judiciary, the Executive, or the citizens or the media, they have a role to play but with responsibility, and they must uphold the Constitution as well as the rule of law. Democracy can be sustained when there is sensitivity to national interest, social objectives and towards each other. As Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar said and I quote, “Democracy is not merely a form of Government. It is primarily a mode of associated living of conjoint, communicated experience. It is essentially an attitude of respect and reverence towards fellow-men.” Unquote

Again, democracy must be participatory. A major leap forward was the decision taken by the Parliament when it passed the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution, which provide for elected representatives from different sections of society, including our tribal people, backward classes and also women who form 50 percent of the population, to Panchayati Raj Institutions and Local Urban bodies. This expanded and deepened the reach of democracy at the grass roots level.

Most importantly, we must have unity of purpose. Our ultimate aim is to have development and freedom, while preserving and protecting the age-old values of our Indian culture, and the principles of tolerance and harmony, which reflect on the image of India on the world platform. We must take a call at this juncture, after our journey of 60 years, and resolve to work collectively for this goal through a well-built democracy. As is said in a Shloka -

which means, unity is the strength of any society and society is weak without it.

Until now, India has demonstrated its unflinching commitment to democracy through a consultative and participatory approach. Democracy cannot be allowed to falter, for it is the very essence of our nationhood. It is the fruit that we are enjoying of the sacrifice of our great freedom fighters and of our long and unique independence struggle under the illustrious leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, a historical responsibility is placed on our shoulders. We must rise to the occasion. We have made progress, we are looked upon as a nation that has much potential. We can together achieve greater heights. I would like to remind all the distinguished Members of what Swami Vivekananda said, and I quote, “Great things have been done in the past in this land, and there is both time and room for greater things to be done yet.” Unquote. With the sincere efforts of all stakeholders of this generation, I hope that our chariot of democracy, surmounting every difficulty and challenge, will carry forward the nation towards progress and prosperity. With these words, I once again convey my very best wishes to all present here, and to all the people of our country on this auspicious occasion. Thank You. Jai Hind!”

Keishing was a member of the first Lok Sabha and is the lone surviving leader, who continues to be a MP. The MP from Manipur is slated to initiate the discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Sunday, when it meets to celebrate the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Later, in the afternoon, Keishing along with two other surviving personalities would be honoured at a joint sitting of the Parliament, which would be attended by the President.

On Thursday, the North East MPs’ Forum honoured him at its meeting held at the Parliament premises. The Forum decided to hold a formal meeting to honour him. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for DoNER Paban Singh Ghatowar, MoS for Rural Development Agatha Sangma and MoS for Water Resources Vincent H Pala, general secretary of Forum Biren Baishya, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Kumar Deepak Das, Bijoya Chakravarty and Kabindra Purkayastha, among others.

Keishing, who is a senior Member of the Forum, spoke at length about his experience in Parliament and the State Assembly. He recalled his close association with Dr Biren Bhattacharyya.

The veteran politician was born in 1920, was first elected to Parliament as a Member of First Lok Sabha (1952-1957 and (1957-61).

“There is a gulf of difference in the Parliament then and now. The way things are going, discipline has been lost. It is not good for the nation,” Keishing told newsmen.

“When I joined the Lok Sabha, all eminent leaders from the freedom struggle were there,” he said, recalling the names of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, first Lok Sabha Speaker GV Mavalankar, and others like Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, NC Chatterjee and Acharya Kripalani and others.

“When the States were being recognised, members could have shouted, as happens now. “The chair’s ruling was respected; the members were very clean hearted and all had love for each other.

Keishing, who completed his graduation in 1949 from St Paul’s Cathedral College in Kolkata, entered politics as a fire brand socialist with Jaiprakash Narayan’s Socialist Party and won his first Lok Sabha seat of Outer Manipur in 1952. He came back to the third Lok Sabha in 1962, once again from the Socialist Party.

When China attacked India in the same year, he decided to join the government’s side as his home State was at risk. “I felt at that time that I should be in government’s side, so I went to Pundit Nehru and asked him to take me in Congress, and he agreed,” recalled Keishing, adding that Nehru made him mediator for talks with the Nagas.

Keishing, known as an articulate statesman, also served as a key leader in the movement to get Manipur, which was a princely State, annexed with India. He was the Chief Minister of Manipur thrice, first for a brief period of less than a year from November 1980 to February 1981, and then after a brief President’s rule, from June 1981 to 1988. He was again Manipur Chief Minister from 1994-97. Later, he was elected Rajya Sabha member in 2002 for the first time, and in 2008 at the age of 88 for the second time.

Shri Rishang Keishing (born 25 October 1920) a senior politician of the Indian National Congress party is presently a Member of the Parliament of India representing Manipur in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Keishing served as Chief Minister of Manipur from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1997.

Personal life

He is also a staunch Christian, and has helped many churches in his home state of Manipur. Keishing also regularly speaks in church and is a much adored orator. Despite his success, he still remains a humble man. He has been married to Khatingla for over 60 years and they have six children, two daughters and four sons. Currently, he lives in Delhi as he serves his second term as Rajya Sabha MP.

She expressed her happiness after winning the competition and said that “it is just the beginning”.

Zennyla: I did my class 10 from St. Joseph’s convent, Kalimpong and then class 11-12 from Tashi Namgyal Academy, Gangtok.

I completed my graduation in B.Com (Hons) from Sri Sathya Sai University in Anantapur at Andhra Pradesh.

I haven’t had any work experience till now because I recently completed my graduation.

My father, Late Pem Dorji Bhutia, was an International football player and was also the captain of the Indian football team once. My mother, Pushpa Bhutia, is presently working in Home department in CM Office.

I have a younger brother, Marco Bhutia, who is presently studying in Himalayan International Residential School in Siliguri, Jalpaiguri.

Zennyla: According to me if you have faith in yourself and a strong belief you will make it big someday in life.

isikkim.com: what does success means to you?

Zennyla: Success occurs in many forms and has many meanings. It includes being happy with yourself and being where you want to be in life. Success is happiness n prosperousness that comes after putting forth some form of effort.

isikkim.com: Which site you visit the most?

Zennyla: (Smiles) I visit Google the most because it has answers to all my questions.

isikkim.com: What are your dream goals in 5 years’ time as regards to career?

Zennyla: I would like to see myself as a successful person in whatever I am doing and by successful I mean satisfied with my life and my job. Probably also holding titles like Miss North East or even Miss India.

isikkim.com: Two important things that you cannot live without

Zennyla: -My family

-My phone

isikkim.com: What was your worst moment in your life and how did you overcome it?

Zennyla: The worst moment in my life was when I lost my dad in 2001. But as time passes even the deepest wounds heal. So, I slowly overcame the loss but he is always there, watching over and guiding me.

isikkim.com: Whom do you admire most & why?

Zennyla: I admire my mom the most because through her I have seen how to become strong in the weakest of times and how to be cheerful even when nothing’s going right. She has bestowed upon me the sense of responsibility and how to be happy even when life is not treating you right.

isikkim.com: Who is your role model?

Zennyla: Tyra Banks

isikkim.com: What will be your role as Miss Sikkim 2012?

Zennyla: As Miss Sikkim 2012 I would like to take part in anything I can do for the state. I hope I live up to everyone’s expectations and be able to make my state proud by winning more contests and participating in many other events.
isikkim.com: Can you name the 3 qualities in you, which you think are important in grabbing the Miss Sikkim title?

Zennyla: -Right focus,

-Passionate desire, and

-A strong determination.

isikkim.com: what are the important preparations that girls should do in order to excel in beauty contests?

Zennyla: Work on your confidence, communication skills and most importantly have faith in yourself.

Isikkim.com: what will be your priority in future; a professional model, acting or academic career?

Zennyla: Yeah, I will definitely like to be a professional model. This title has boosted me in every ways. As of now I have little knowledge of acting. I wanted to peruse ma academic career hand to hand. May be this September I am leaving UK for my higher studied (MBA), but it is only of one year and I want myself to be attached with the glamour world.

Zennyla: I would like to repeat the same thing I have been telling again and that is please don’t get discouraged by criticisms. People are always there to criticize and make fun but if you want something really bad, Don’t hold back because of those people who don’t move forward and neither lets others move forward…

She is one of the most famous women in the world – and one of the prettiest too. But the fact remains - Aishwarya is a college dropout. She began her career as an economic analyst at Khandwala Securities Limited after graduation before doing advertisement campaigns.

Salman Khan: Bollywood's bad boy Salman Khan never finished college. He along with his brothers studied at the Scindia School in Gawlior and St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai.

Deepika did her schooling at Sophia High School and later joined Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. However she gave up studies for modelling and acting.

Shah Rukh Khan: SRK did his schooling at St Columbia School in New Delhi and we hear he won the 'sword of honour' for representing the 'spirit of the school'. He was an all rounder – good at academics, sports and arts. He did his honors in Economics and joined Jamia Milia Islamia for Masters in Mass Communications, and then dropped out to pursue a career in acting.

Katrina has travelled all over the world. And she started modeling at a very young age. She has not really had much of a chance to study.

Hrithik studied at Bombay Scottish School and then went on to graduate in Commerce from Sydenham College.

Kareena Kapoor did her schooling at Jamnabai Narsee in Mumbai, then Welham in Dehradun. She read Commerce for two years in Mithibai College in Mumbai. She did a year of Law school before deciding to take up acting as a career.
