IMPHAL, Feb 11: Rich tributes were paid to (late) Thangsuan Lal of Assam Regiment who was recently killed in the accident when an avalanche hit a troop of combat soldiers in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.

The mortal remains of the deceased soldier was given full salute by the Indian Army led by Maj General DS Hooda, GOC 57 Mtn. Division today at Imphal Tulihal Airport.

Speaking to media persons, wife of deceased Thangsuan said that she came to know about her husband’s death in that avalanche accident only from the news reported in the local dailies. Her husband was previously posted at Hyderabad.

Maj Gen DS Hooda offers salute to Thangsuanlal

Imphal, February 11, 2010: Among the 17 Army personnel who were killed in a heavy avalanche at Gulmarg in Jammu & Kashmir on Monday, one of the victims was a Manipuri and his body was brought to Imphal today.

The deceased Manipur Army jawan has been identified as Rifleman Thangsuanlal (24) of Vengnuam SA Road, New Lamka in Churachandpur district.

Covered in tri-colour Indian National flag, the coffin carrying his body was brought to Imphal today in a flight of the Indian Airlines.

A large number of people including family members, relatives, friends and other wellwishers who have come from Churachandpur in three trucks and one bus was present to receive the body at the airport.

On arrival at Imphal Tulihal Airport, GOC of 57th Mountain Division Major General DS Hooda and other Army officers paid homage along with offering floral tributes and according guard of honour to the departed soul.

Thangsuanlal joined the service in 2003 as a Rifleman of 2 Assam Regiment and was posted at the Military Station, Hyderabad.

He is survived by his wife Chinglungniang Paite and two children, a son and a daughter.

The son S Lalgousiam is two and half years old while the daughter, Chinghunmawi is just four months old.

Talking to mediapersons after the wreath laying ceremony, Major General Hooda informed that Thangsuanlal was among 600 other Army personnel who are undergoing training on high altitude warfare at Gulmarg when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The Army officer also assured every possible assistance would be provided to the bereaved family members from the side of the Army.

Still not being able to reconcile to the twist of her fate, newly widowed Chinglungniang said ‘I was shocked to hear about the tragic incident that took away my husband.

I am a hapless widow now.

I don’t what to do”.

Nonetheless, recovering her composure soon enough, she added ‘But I will never lose heart in grooming my children to become perfect persons.

During his last visit in September 2009, my husband promised me to make the two kids perfect persons”.

As suggested by her husband, Chinglungniang informed that she will send her son Lalgousiam in the best school in Churachandpur.

The funeral service of the departed solider is scheduled to be performed at New Lamka tomorrow along with a fitting military honour.
