Senapati DC Nidhi Kesarwani receives ‘Excellence Award for Mahatma Gandhi NREGA 2008-09' during a glittering function at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on February 2 from the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh

IMPHAL, Feb 8: Deputy Commissioner and District Programme Co-ordinator of NREGS, Senapati district Nidhi Kesarwani was awarded the prestigious ‘Excellence Award for Mahatma Gandhi NREGA 2008-09′ during a glittering function at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on February 2.

The award was present-ed to her jointly by Prime Mi- nister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the presence of Union Ministers CP Joshi, Pradeep Kumar Jain, Sisir Kumar Adhikari and Aga-tha K Sangma.

Manipur was represen-ted by Rural Development Minister Md Allauddin Khan in the said function.

Senapati district and 24 others were chosen from 618 districts of the country for the Excellence Award by a Central Expert Committee. Senapati was chosen parti-cularly for three unique per- formances in the implementation of NREGS.

Firstly, durable and sustainable assets like inter- village roads, water reservoir system, drought proofing, etc were created under NREGS in the villages strict-ly as per the technical speci- fication, all guaranteed 100 days of work was provided with transparency and accountable distribution of wages.

Secondly, a pilot project of LIC insurance cover for the NREGS workers was initiated in one its blocks namely Saikul by SDO Dr K Shyamsunder Singh under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner. This is one of its kind in India whereby NREGS workers would pay an annual premium of only Rs 550 and he/she would get accident, death and maturity benefits.

Thirdly, an NREGA software was developed by the District DRDA Technical Team headed by Hemchand under the guidance of the DC. This software drastically reduces the formula- tion time of technical estimates for more than 750 villages in the district and increasing its accuracy at the same time.
Expressing happiness over the award, the DC/DPC (NREGS) Senapati district has thanked and congratulated the District Program- mes Officers, POs, APOs, engineers and all the State for this tremendous feat.
