Sometimes it makes me bewilder, while we haven’t even phonologically constructed our Thadou/Zou/Paite, etc language to the zenith, we talk about script. Like the Thadou-Kuki script of Khuplam Milui Lenthang, and now comes the Zou script. Anyway…..we have to move on.

Pupu zou, It will b great if u could provide us the person identity. Nothing can b change as and when ever v lik 2.

What i wonder is, do we really have script? Retrospecting our civilization in the past, the possibility seems really bleak. Sometimes i feel, its an exaggeration about us tendered by ethnic-nationalism. Whether we have a script or not, unless we have political space, the usage too is also bleak… hmmm I’m so pessimistic about this…lol

Even me am not aware of any script except that of PAUCHINHAU LAI, which was popular for sometime in parts of Chin hill during the British time. It is said that even today, there are people who still followed the religious founded by Pauchinhau. This PAUCHINHAU LAI is studied by those ‘OUR PEOPLE’ opting PAITE paper at the graduate level. Mind you, … See Morethis is studied as a part of the history of the people, and does not mean that somebody is trying to use it in the present. Things move on and one has to move along with it…but past and history cannot be set aside…Lets discover more of our living past and tradition, refined and modified them if necessary, but never stop to move forward…As i said am not aware of A BA AW DA script that was of the past. Need more information if it is really genuine? Lastly, the history of written script become prominent among the Zo people with the coming of modernisation, especially Christianity and formal education in the last part of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century….

Meitei scrip ‘Kok, Sam, Lai…etc…’ has created a big mess in Manipur education now. This aspect should not be forgotten as we move on…

Exactly, its such a pain,,,,,,,where the hell dat script will take us in future????

When the Meitei script was develop, they did not know it would be decoded into a computer readable scripts, but it is being used on mobile phone and is computerized. The Devanagari was used only after a decade since its discovery…. the Zou Scripts might be use after 50 or 100 or 200 years, but i believe that it would be used one day.

      Speaking of Pau Cin Hau…

I’ve been doing research on the indigenous scripts of north Burma and north-eastern India. After I learned about the Pau Cin Hau (laipian lai) script, I decided to develop support for it in the Unicode standard. My preliminary document is available at:

      http://std.dkuug.dk/JTC1/SC2/WG2/docs/n3781.pdf

If anyone has more information about the Pau Cin Hau script, please do contact me.

      Best,

On another note: I was drawn to this message because of the phrase “University of Michigan”. I cannot read any Chin language, so I have no idea what this is about, but since I’m from the same university, I’m wondering if it’s related to questions I’ve been asking about the Zou script that is being proposed for primary level in Manipur.

In his message above, Thianlalmuan Ngaihte said that the Pau Cin script is used by those doing graduate studies in Paite. Is there any more information about this? Where?

To the others: As someone who studies the politics of language and script in South Asia, I fully understand your concerns about the political fallout of Meetei Mayek in Manipur, as well as the questions about what is the actual value of such scripts in the modern day. These are good considerations.

      Best,
      Anshuman Pandey
