Dimapur, July 8 (MExN): The Naga Hoho has cautioned the Prime Minister of India that the ongoing communal violence in Assam’s troubled North Cachar Hills, if not stopped soon, will have far-reaching and ‘undesirable’ ramifications in the politics of the  north east region. Making the caution, the Naga Hoho has  sought action from the Prime Minister of India against the current situation in North Cachar Hills, where hostilities are on between the Dimasa and Naga communities. A copy of the representation addressed to the Prime Minister was received here from the Naga hoho today.  The hostilities have turned the people  into refugees in their own land overnight and if allowed to prevail, “the politics of violence in the North Cachar Hills will have undesirable political ramifications in the Northeast,” the Naga Hoho cautioned.

“The spiraling of violence in North Cachar Hill, Assam, has continued unabated, and the cries of people have gone unheard and unnoticed in the corridors of power in New Delhi. It’s a tragic shame; and the continuing silence by your government only strengthens the hands of the perpetrators who seek to drive a wedge and severe the rich traditional relationship between the Dimasa and Nagas,” the Naga Hoho lamented to the PM.

In its letter, the Naga Hoho ‘recommended’ that the “main perpetrators” of violence who are  trying to ‘severe the relationship’ between Dimasa and Nagas should be identified; equally, measures to protect the lives of all Dimasa and Nagas caught in the cycle of violence in North Cachar Hills must be initiated, the Hoho stated.

The hoho also sought adequate relief and “respectful compensation” to all those affected by the violence. Civil and military agencies serving under the Government of India are also to desist from indirectly or directly “assisting the main perpetrators” responsible for the NC Hills violence, the Naga Hoho stated in another ‘recommendation.’  The Prime Minister is also requested to direct the state government of Assam “to intervene through democratic and fair means and to respond to the crisis in a non-biased manner.”

The violence, the representation said, has led to the death of many innocent Dimasa and Naga lives and has rendered thousands of people homeless. The  hoho also mentioned the June 29 ‘Rally for Restoration of Peace in NC Hills’ in Dimapur organized jointly by the two affected ethnic peoples.  “Mr. Prime Minister, the voices of peace needs your able leadership and the Naga Hoho urges you to immediately step in and demonstrate your wisdom to effectively restore peace in NC Hills. Mr. Prime Minister, the urgency of now demands your immediate attention. We look forward to your response,” the Naga Hoho added in appeal.
