27 Jun 2009, (AGENCIES): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Friday (June 26)said he had never complained of being racially discriminated in the country. Clarifying the remarks attributed to him by media on racism at an international conference in Singapore, Lal Thanhawla said they have been “misinterpreted and not correctly appreciated”. “What he (the Chief Minister) has stated was that India is a multiracial country and there could occasionally be some misunderstanding based on physical features of individuals from particular region or regions of the country,” an official statement from the state government said
here.

According to some media reports the Mizoram Chief Minister has said the “Indians are racist and that he himself was a victim of racism”.

The official statement said “he did not even distantly suggested or hinted that the people of India are racist and that he was victim of racism”.

“It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister’s observations have been inaccurately interpreted and inappropriate conclusion drawn therefrom,” it added.
