UGs should have nothing to do with students unions: KNO

Lamka, May 30: The Kuki National Organisation has strongly denounced the criminalisation of education in the state for decades resulting in the occurrence of many unwanted things. The assassination of Prof Islamuddin inside the MU campus on May 25 is a glaring example, it said. In a lengthy press statement, the KNO today said that peace loving and rational individuals should not allow such acts of barbarism to continue, at least in the vicinity of educational institutions, while calling upon the public in general and the valley based students’ union in particular for self-introspection at this critical moment.

Stating that its unfortunate and disturbing to note that most of the valley based students’ unions in the state are backed by their respective UG mentors, it said they have been indulging in activities which are not related to academics and the inevitable consequences have been manifested in the ‘power of guns than pen.’

If the valley based UG groups are serious about the land and the people it would be a sensible step to outrightly severe their nexus with the students unions so as to ensure the ‘great brains and minds ‘ do not get disturbed, it said.

Reiterating that higher educational institutions like the MU should function as a place where volatile, socially divisive differences can be rationally resolved, it said if the ‘gun culture’ rules the roost, the future of the society, mainly of the students community would be at stake.

While appreciating the efforts made by the US President, Barack Obama with regards to restoration of democracy in Burma, the KNO expressed sincere concern over the health deterioration of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her continued detention by the military junta.

On behalf of the subjugated people, the KNO urged the world’s two largest democracies of India and the USA to play a more proactive role to ensure the handing over of power to the legitimately elected Aung San Suu Kyi-led NLD party.

The statement was made by the secretary for information and publicity, KNO, Lenin H Kuki.

In another press handout, the KNO expressed serious concern at the “uncompromising and non reconciliatory” stand taken by the UKLF over the barbaric attack on its cadres at C Tengnoupal village in Chandel district leading to the death of one innocent villager and injury to two civilians on the May 28.

In this connection, it clarified that the unfortunate shootout which took place at Gujil village along the Churachandpur-Chandel border, in which two cadres of the UKLF lost their lives on May 11, was accidental and undesireable. This was stated by Th Stephen Kuki, under secretary for information and publicity, KNO, in a release today.
