Public must intervene to fight Crime

Dimapur, March 29 (MExN): Civil organizations, from the Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights to the Watsu Mungdang have vehemently flayed the March 25 rape, robbery and reported attempted murder of a family at Darogapathar in Dimapur. In one voice, the organizations have called for stringent and uncompromised punishment against the criminals involved in the crime on the fateful night.

Mention may be made here that five miscreants broke into a house at Darogapathar in Dimapur in the early hours of March 25. The five miscreants looted valuables from the house and also allegedly gang-raped a girl of the house, besides reportedly attempting to kill the victims. One of the five accused was captured while the four, including one reportedly belonging to a Naga underground outfit, are still yet to be captured.

In a message today, the Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights expressed revulsion at the savage rape, robbery and assault committed by “5 inhuman creatures” on March 25 night at Darogapathar in Dimapur. “The crime is all the more sinister because the criminals had the audacity to break into the house and physically assault all the occupants. According to police report, the crime also consisted of attempted murder and armed burglary, besides rape” the NPMHR stated.

Expressing vehement condemnation of the crime, the organization urged the police to take all necessary action at the earliest to ensure that the criminals are brought to justice and befitting punishment meted out to them. The NPMHR has expressed deepest sympathies to the victim and her family.

The NPMHR also lauded the victim’s neighbors for chasing down one of the criminals and handing him over to the competent authorities. “Any kind of crime cannot be condoned in a civilized society and it is the bounden duty of all citizens to intervene and report any perceived violations of law” the NPMHR said.

On a note of lament, the organization expressed dismay that the abominable crime of rape has been steadily rising in the state over the last few years. While appreciating the compassion in rehabilitative and corrective justice to correct the ways of criminals, the NPMHR however, reminded that ‘there are certain crimes so inhuman that it has to be nipped in the bud’.
The organization has demanded the details of rape convictions to be made public through the local dailies to serve as deterrent for other “would-be rapists”. ‘Let us not forget that the victims are forced to live with the trauma for the rest of their lives’ the NPMHR reminded.

‘UGs should take action’

Noting that one of the offenders in the March 25 crime belonged to an underground faction, the All Sumi Students Union (SKK) has urged the “concern underground faction” to take action against the culprit. Strongly condemning the ugly crime, the apex Sumi students’ organization said if the culprit belongs to “any of the faction”, the outfit in concern must act.

In a note, the SKK urged the state authorities and law-enforcing agencies to speed up the investigations and ‘capture the miscreants’. The SKK has demanded the highest punishment for the offenders to serve as an example to deter similar crimes in the future. The authorities are also urged not to grant bail to the criminals.

Dimapur Watsu Mungdang for punishment

The Dimapur Watsu Mungdang unit has also vehemently flayed the crime and has demanded from the state authority and district administration to capture the culprits for exemplary punishment.

The Watsu Mungdang stated in a note today: “The punishment serves two important purposes. At the personal level it provides certain moral and psychological satisfaction to the victim of sexual violence and at the social level it acts as deterrence against committing the same crime in the future. Therefore, an exemplary punishment will act as deterrence not only for the immediate culprit but for all potential criminals in society and hence if we fail to punish the sex offenders, defeating the inhuman act we would not only be denying justice to the victim but providing a license for others to commit the same in the future. In which case, we will be pushing our sisters, mothers and daughters to the jaws of the rapists”.

The organization reminded that the psyche behind sexual offences is not being merely an impulsive act motivated by circumstances but a serious psychological and personality problem. Offenders are prone to commit the same crime again, the Watsu Mungdang warned.

The word ‘rape’ was alien to the Naga society but it has become rampant, the Watsu unit stated. All village councils in Nagaland are appealed to, to come up with new and strong rules to punish sex offenders by the present “customary” practices.

Call for preventive measures

Strongly condemning the March 25 gang rape and dacoity incident, the Western Sumi Totimi Hoho (WSTH) urged the concern authorities to take note as such and to immediately take measures to prevent such crimes. A press release issued by the WSTH general secretary, Ahimsa Zhimomi while condemning the crime, asserted that it is a matter of grave concern that the lives of common citizens are at risk even within the security of their own homes. Terming as disturbing the ‘increase in organised crimes against women in Nagaland’, the WSTH appealed the authorities to apprehend and award exemplary punishment to the culprits as per the provision of law.

No sleep till justice

The Ao Senso Telongjem of Dimapur today said it shall not remain silent and that it would ensure punishment for the criminals who committed the March 25 crime. A note issued by the organization described the crime as totally unacceptable and inhumane and declared that the union would ‘use its every inch of strength’ to ensure that the criminals are brought to justice and punishment.

The ASTD assured that it shall keep a close watch over the law enforcement or investigating agencies to ensure that the culprits are captured and that no leniency is shown.

Besides, while noting that one of the criminals belongs to a ‘certain’ Naga underground faction, the organization has asked ‘to such faction’ to assist in apprehending the said miscreant and hand it over to the legitimate law-enforcing agencies.

Also condemning the gang-rape and dacoity incident in the same vein, the Molungyimsen Students’ Union, Dimapur Institution (MSUDI) asserted that there should be no place for such criminals in a civilized society. Urging all right-thinking citizens to unite to fight these anti-socials, the MSUDI termed the incident as beyond human toleration. The law-enforcing agencies are asked to book the culprits at the earliest and that severe punishment awarded to them.
