Church attack condemned by AMCO

IMPHAL, Dec 16: The All Manipur Christian Organisation, AMCO, has condemned the recent incident of dismantling of a Baptist church at Chingmeirong Kabui Khul by the activists of TRC, Rev. S Vaiphei said during a press conference held this afternoon at the MBC Chingmeirong conference hall.

The incident of dismantling of the religious place at Chingmeirong Kabui village by the activist of TRC was very unfortunate and it seems those activists have failed to realize the concept of securalism which is the hallmark of a democratic state like Manipur, he said while stating that he felt sorry that all the property at the church was destroyed and even women and children were manhandled.

He urged the government to look into the matter and to compensate the losses borne by the victim family including the church which cost around Rs. 70,000. He also added that Christianity was a religion which did not advocate revenge in their preaching while appealing that such incidents should not happen any further.

Father Mark, the vice-president of AMCO said freedom of religion should not be disrespected and felt sorry that some people looked down on other’s religions. The authorities should take responsibility for the safety of the victims, he said while declaring that they did not want any inter-communal dispute and wanted to live in peace and harmony.

Kaphun Kamei, the victim, appealed that he wanted to live in peace practising his religion and requested that he be allowed to live with his relatives in the village as he had no disrespect for any other religion.

Kabui groups clash at Chingmeirong

Imphal, Dec 15: Tension between two groups of Kabui community of Chingmeirong in Imphal took an ugly turn on late Sunday evening when one of the groups turned a mob and dismantled a church and a house which stood in the village dominated by Tinkao Ragwang Chapriak (Indigenous religion of the Zeliangrong) believers.

The incident took place late evening at about 8 pm at Chingmeirong Kabui village located at Imphal east district under Lamphel police station.

According to one Kaphun, following an indiscriminate pelting of stones at his house that evening, he and his family rushed out of the house and found Lansinga, 60, and Athui Daimei, 55, of the same locality pelting the stones. Both of them were drunk, Kaphun alleged.

As he (Kaphun) tried to stop them from pelting stones, both the alleged culprits assaulted him, his wife and a daughter who also tried to prevent the assault, conveyed Kaphun. They were then joined by a mob ranging about a hundred who started attacking his property including a church (Chingmeirong Baptist church) which stood at his campus, further alleged the victim.

The attack practically damaged the church and five rooms including three empty shops, bedrooms and the quarter of an evangelist of the church. Apart from the property damaged some minor injuries were caused due to the assault meted out to them by the mob.

A complaint has been lodged and the alleged culprits Lansinga and Athui have been arrested by the police.

According to Kaphun there are only five Christian households in the locality who have been practicing the religion which is strictly prohibited by the village authority.
