Manipur monitoring bird flu outbreak in Assam

Posted By admin On 30 Nov 2008. Under Uncategorized  Tags: Manipur   | View 200 Times
IMPHAL, Nov 30 – The report of outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Assam doesn’t have much impact in Manipur which already experienced the outbreak in July last year. The outbreak was reported from Thakuria chuba of Rajabazar village in Assam’s Hajo revenue circle under Kamrup (Rural) district hardly 24 days after the Centre notified that the country is free from avian influenza on November 4 last.

However, the State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department is monitoring the situation.

“We’re yet to get official information, but we’ve been monitoring it after the last year’s incident”, Dr Th Dorendra Singh, Director of the department said on Saturday.

After July 2007 outbreak in Manipur, the State authority has been conducting various forms of awareness programmes for the public as well as the media.

After the outbreak in Assam, Meghalaya had already sounded an alert to prevent the outbreak in their State. The outbreak had once hit Tripura in April this year.

Newmai News adds: P Rajen Singh, Bacteriology specialist of Disease Investigation Laboratory of the Veterinary department harped on the need to prevent the outbreak of the pandemic of bird flu in the State. He also informed that samples are collected every month from suspected areas such as the Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district where migratory birds abound and are sent to the surveillance team.

Mumbai terror victim from Manipur cremated

SOBHAPATI SAMOM

IMPHAL, Nov 30 – Manipur witnessed a hero’s welcome when a victim of Mumbai terror attack reached his native village here on Saturday.

The body of 30-year-old Maibam Bimolchandra, who worked as assistant manager at Mumbai’s Oberoi Hotel, was flown back to his Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai village in Manipur’s Imphal East district here last morning.

Bimolchandra was killed by the terrorists on the fateful night of ‘Black Wednesday’ when the attack first began at the lobby of Oberoi Hotel. He was hit by three bullets.

Besides attending the reception at the Tulihal airport here, hundreds of men and women in their traditional mourning attire took part in the floral tribute ceremonies held at Top Khongnangkhong PC ground near here and also at his native village before his body was consigned to flames.

Condemning the arson act of the terrorists, deceased’s father M Nandababu said it should not be a battle of gun versus civilians. Every human being should condemn such acts against humanity, he felt.

“My last word with him(Bimolchandra) who never wanted to work there (Mumbai) was on November 24 during which he promised me to construct a new house for us, but everything is gone now”, the grief stricken father narrated.
